Program notes:  Nativity Pastorales was written in Fall 2003 and performed by Kirchoff at a holiday concert in rural eastern Colorado, the community where she was raised. In trying to compose a piece that would relate to the lives and concerns of a rural audience, Kirchoff linked the pastoral elements of the Nativity story with life on the plains of Colorado.  The five distinct sections of the piece are performed without break.

Hoping - as farmers wait perpetually for rain
Journey - narrow dirt roads disappear over rolling horizons
Sheep and Shepherds - livestock playfully romp over pastures
Angels' Dance - stars flicker across a pure black sky
Lullaby - the night hushes
